Empowering communities through health education, emergency preparedness, and cultural preservation
About Us
Global Indigenous Health Coalition (GIHC) is a student-led organization that aims to collaborate with medical experts, local organizations, and university clubs to create engaging and culturally sensitive presentations and lectures about relevant health topics. Our mission is to deliver presentations, create events on important health topics that are not only just a “lecture” but ones that are engaging, culturally sensitive and align more with the communities we serve. By bridging the academic knowledge with community needs, we aim to create resources across different cultural and linguistic contexts, ensuring that health education is meaningful and inclusive.

Our Journey
February 2025
The Global Indigenous Health Coalition was founded with a vision to bridge healthcare gaps in Indigenous communities through education and empowerment.
Nutrition and Diet

We presented to an audience of 29 community members, with 46 servings of food made under our limited budget! Our team of wonderful volunteers worked a total of 20+ hours preparing, cooking, presenting, and cleaning! In collaboration with St. Paul Christian Church's Adult ESL program, we worked to promote literacy amongst dual language learners while presenting about healthy eating habits and nutrition.
NCAAT Festival

We had the privilege of sharing indigenous food, games, and art to the Durham Community. Our booth had cultural activities and have conversations about indigenous traditions. And the event gave us the opportunity to help raise funds directly for our Free First Aid Kit project.
MAO Festival

On May 31st, we were grateful to attend the first ever Montagnard Asian Market. We sold papaya salad and cucumber asăm with thai tea and passionfruit mojitos. Seeing our traditional dishes enjoyed by everyone and connecting with both Indigenous and non-indigenous community members was the most valuable part of our experience
First Aid Kit Presentation and Distribution

We made the first-ever flyer fully translated into Jarai about Basic First Aid. Our interpreter worked with elderly Jarai members to come up with new metaphors because some medical terms don’t exist in the language, Our team packed kits, designed manuals and presentations with the advice of healthcare professionals
Flu Shot Event

We organized a community flu shot clinic to promote preventive healthcare in our local Indigenous communities. This event provided free vaccinations and health screenings, making healthcare more accessible to community members.
Continuing Our Mission
Continuing to expand our programs and reach more communities. We're actively planning new health education workshops, community events, and partnerships to further our mission of empowering Indigenous communities through healthcare education and access.
